Dust, (Hindi with English subtitles), 80 min, 2019
A photograph offers a clue to a man retracing the footsteps of his dead love. The photograph captures a moment in the life of a little boy making his way through a landscape brutalised by civil war unfolding in the ‘hinterlands’ of central India. Having fled this hinterland, a young woman attempts to find her anchor in the city, which too is brutalised by cycles of violence. The film tells a story of loss and displacement, of love, loyalty and survival.

Talk | MADHU RAMNATH
Wild Foods, Language and Indigenous Identity
Words used in ‘specific’ areas of food collection also reflect ‘general’ daily activities of forest peoples. From this point of departure on, Madhu examines metaphors that show a deep understanding of the way forests function, and how this goes beyond ‘causality’. With special focus on Bastar, the talk reflects on the role of language in identity and conservation among indigenous peoples.
